The scandal that I’m talking about here is Watergate. Now Watergate was a major political scandal in the United States involving the administration of President Richard Nixon from 1972-1974 that led to Nixon’s resignation .
The scandal stemmed from the Nixon administration’s attempts to cover up its involvement in the June 17, 1972, break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington D.C.
During the whole scandal Nixon would denied by saying, “I’m not a crook.”
At the trial, E. Howard Hunt, who had planned the break-in and 4 of the burglars pleaded guilty. G. Gordon Liddy, who helped in the planning, and James McCord, refused to cooperate.
Chuck Colson was an American attorney and political advisor who served as Special Council to President Richard Nixon from 1969 to 1970. He was known as the “hatchet man.” He served 7 months in the federal Maxwell Prison in Alabama. He had a lifechanging conversion because of his stint in prison. He was a born again Christian in 1973 and started a non-profit prison ministry.
On my birthday, Aug. 9, 1974, the year I turned 9, President Nixon resigned as President to keep from being impeach. Shortly after Gerald Ford became President for only 2 short years.
One of the thing that Ford had done that maybe he shouldn’t had done was pardoned Nixon. That may had hurt his chances for seeking reelection for his first full term as President. But he was loyal to Nixon. Was it a mistake?
Sometimes, not being loyal to a former President, like Mike Pence wasn’t to Donald Trump can actually hurt. At the first Republicans debate, Mike Pence was booed because he wasn’t loyal to Trump.
How George Bush Sr. was able to get elected President, was the fact that he rode on Reagan’s coattails and popularity.
Whereas, Al Gore, broke away from Bill Clinton’s popularity when he ran for President in 2000. He tried to disassociate from Clinton’s and his sex scandal.
The big question is: should a Vice-President stand behind a popular president as they seek their own terms or go out on the limb? Should Ford have been loyal to Nixon and pardoned him for his involvement with Watergate?
Even though, Nixon was President for at least 6 years, 2 terms, Watergate hurt his popularity. Whereas, even though, Clinton was impeach for lying and having sex with Monica Lewinsky, he was still more popular than Richard Nixon. Go figured!
I’m not defending Richard Nixon, like I said I was a child during that time. Seeing the Democrats as they are today, a person has to wondered if the break-in at Watergate was stage?
Even though, the Democrats were more normal back then, than they are today. When did the Democrats become crazy Leftist?
Think about it, wiretapping is nothing new. It was done during Watergate and it was done with the Russian hoax, made up by the FBI and the Democrats to slam Donald Trump. They had done it to President Kennedy and President Reagan as well. Even President Obama was somewhat guilty of wiretapping as well. It goes to show that some candidates will stop at nothing to get elected to public office or even reelected , just to keep the power.
In next week, blog, I will asked a “what if” question that may or may not affect Watergate. It will have to deal with the year, 1968 and what happened back then. I will also bring that into this election year as well. Stay tune!!
